jambo

the moment you have all been waiting for: my first post from africaaaaa! we have now completed three days of work in the court. so far it has been.. interesting. david and i are working for the criminal division of the high court, but our judge is coincidentally in malibu. so we have been left with the task of researching and memoing the state of juvenile justice in uganda. not a broad topic at all. we're making some headway, and today we visited the naguru remand home (juvey hall) to chat with the warden and some of the kids. it definitely wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it was certainly not up to the standard that it should be.

lucky for us kampala has its fair share of chinese, italian, indian, and american food, but yesterday we had our first dose of full on african food. i had matoke and g nut sauce. matoke is basically mushed up plantains...but they taste more like turnips/potatoes/squash. not as bad as it sounds. g nut sauce is their version of peanut sauce, so it was almost like pad thai buuutt...with bananas. you should google it. oh additionally, today we had some freshly slaughtered crocodile. tastes just like alligator.

oh also on the lines of food, the court staff have been brining us snacks and drinks everyday....awesome. all of their drinks are for sure in glass bottles which makes them more delicious. and today we got some tasty bananas (not plantains) and some samosas. which were tasty.

our apartments are cozy. definitely better than george page (and for 1/5 of the price). we have a little kitchen and one bedroom (jen and i are going to get real close) and a baby bathroom. but we have a sweet view over some hills. our neighborhood is interesting. lots of hustle and bustle but a few good restaurants. (and some nice hotels around to escape to) ill put up some photos. nothing too exciting has happened so far. we are going rafting down the nile with cochran on sunday. teehee. stay tuned.

ok so these photos are in reverse chronological order...super. enjoy. (sorry theyre so small. my internet is rather african.)

well this is a rooster. it was just walkin around the remand home.

here was a nice little fella in the remand home.

the fellas and ducks at the remand home.

our creepy mosquito nets which apparently look like aliens. we havent untied them yet...

here's the view outside our window at sunrise. yeah...we haven't really been able to sleep past sunrise yet. at least it's pretty.

aaaand the sweet rave tunnel from my AWESOME... layover in detroit.
